PILLAR 3: Build Relationships, Not Transactions

If Pillar 1 is what you give and Pillar 2 is how often you show up, Pillar 3 is about how deeply you connect.

Because here's what separates natural networkers from everyone else: They care about people regardless of whether those people ever become customers.

Read that again.

This isn't a "technique." It's a posture. A way of seeing people. And ironically, it's the most profitable approach there is — because people can feel the difference between someone who sees them as a human and someone who sees them as a number.

The Relationship Mindset

Transaction mindset: "If I help this person, will they buy from me?"

Relationship mindset: "This person is interesting. I want to know more about their story."

Transaction mindset: "I need to follow up so they don't forget about my offer."

Relationship mindset: "I haven't heard from Sarah in a while. I hope she's doing okay. Let me check in."

Transaction mindset: "This person said no. They're not a lead. Move on."

Relationship mindset: "This person said no to that offer. They're still a human I respect. The relationship continues."

See the difference?

The transaction mindset keeps a tally. The relationship mindset keeps a connection.

How to Actually Build Relationships (Not Just "Network")

Remember what people tell you.

When someone mentions they're going through something — a job change, a health challenge, a new baby, a move — write it down. Then follow up about it later. "Hey, how did that job interview go?" is one of the most powerful sentences in business. Because it communicates: I was listening. I care. You matter to me beyond what you can buy.

Celebrate other people's wins publicly.

When someone in your network accomplishes something, don't just think "good for them." Tell them. Better yet, tell the world. Share their post. Tag them with a genuine compliment. Amplify their moment.

This does two things: it makes them feel incredible, and it shows everyone else that you're the kind of person who lifts people up.

Connect people with each other.

This is a networking superpower that almost nobody uses. When you meet someone and think, "They should know so-and-so," make the introduction.

"Hey Maria, meet James. James is doing something really cool with [X] and I thought you two might hit it off."

Now you've created value for TWO people — and neither of them will forget that you were the bridge.

Be interested, not interesting.

Stop worrying about what to say. Start worrying about what to ask.

"What are you working on right now?" "What's been the biggest challenge?" "What would make the biggest difference for you this month?"

The person who asks great questions and genuinely listens will always be more memorable than the person who talks the most.

The Long Game

Some of the most valuable relationships in business take months — even years — to fully develop. The person who casually follows your content today might become your biggest referral source in 18 months. The conversation that seems "unproductive" now might lead to an opportunity you can't even imagine yet.

Natural networking is a long game. And the people who play it — who invest in relationships without needing an immediate return — are the ones who build businesses that last.

Your Action Step

Make a list of 10 people in your world — online or offline — who you'd like to build a deeper relationship with. Not "prospects." PEOPLE. People whose work you admire, whose journey resonates with you, whose values align with yours.

Over the next 30 days, engage with each of them genuinely. Comment on their stuff. Send a message that isn't a pitch. Ask about their life. Celebrate their wins.

No agenda. Just connection.
