PILLAR 6: Follow Up With Heart — Not a Script
Let's talk about the follow-up. Because this is where most people either go wrong — or give up entirely.
The common approach: Send a pitch. Wait a few days. Send a "just checking in!" message. Wait again. Send a "last chance!" message. Feel weird about all of it.
That's not follow-up. That's pressure. And people feel the difference.
Natural follow-up is the opposite of pressure. It's continuation. It's care. It's the kind of thing a good friend does — not because they're tracking a pipeline, but because they actually give a damn.
What Heart-Led Follow-Up Looks Like
It's specific.
Not "Hey, just following up!" — which communicates nothing except "I want something from you."
But: "Hey, last time we talked you mentioned you were trying to figure out how to get more time back in your week. I came across something this morning that made me immediately think of you — mind if I share it?"
That's specific. That's thoughtful. That's a follow-up that actually serves the other person.
It's timely — and tied to something real.
The best follow-ups are anchored to real moments:
"I saw your post about [thing] and wanted to reach out..."
"I remembered you mentioned [challenge] — did you ever figure that out?"
"Happy birthday! I hope this year brings you everything you've been building toward."
"I just finished [book you recommended] and you were right — it was exactly what I needed."
These aren't scripts. They're the kind of messages a person who was genuinely paying attention sends. And they hit completely differently than "just wanted to touch base."
It respects a "not now."
If someone isn't interested right now — in your business, your product, your invitation — that's okay. That's allowed. And the way you handle that moment either strengthens the relationship or ends it.
The natural networker says: "Totally get it. No pressure at all. I'm here if anything changes — and either way, I'm glad we're connected."
And they mean it.
Then they keep showing up. Keep being a genuine presence. Keep adding value. Because they understand that "not now" is not the same as "not ever." And even if it IS "never," the relationship still matters.
That's the long game. And it pays.
The Follow-Up System That Doesn't Feel Like a System
You don't need a CRM. You don't need a color-coded spreadsheet. You need this:
A simple habit of caring.
When someone crosses your mind — reach out. Don't overthink it. A quick "Hey, thought of you today. How are things?" goes further than you know.
When someone shares good news — celebrate it. Out loud. Publicly or privately.
When someone goes quiet — check on them. Not with an agenda. With genuine care.
When you said you'd do something — do it. Immediately. Not "I'll get to that later." Now.
Your reputation is built one follow-through at a time.
Your Action Step
Look back through your conversations from the last 30-60 days. Find 5 people you had a genuine connection with — and then nothing happened. Not because the relationship was over, but because life got busy.
Reach out to each of them this week. No pitch. Just a real, human message. Specific to them. With no expectation attached.
See what comes back.
